Discover Kraken Sushi & Beyond

Tucked along 4022 N Western Ave, Chicago, IL 60618, United States, Kraken Sushi & Beyond feels like the kind of neighborhood spot you stumble into once and then keep coming back to. I first visited on a busy Friday night after a friend insisted their sushi rolls were some of the freshest in the area. After several visits-both dine-in and takeout-I can say the experience has been consistently satisfying, from the quality of the fish to the relaxed, welcoming vibe inside the dining room.

The menu is extensive without being overwhelming. You’ll find classic maki rolls like spicy tuna and California, but also creative house specialties layered with textures and sauces that actually make sense together. One roll I keep ordering combines tempura shrimp, avocado, and a lightly torched salmon topping finished with a tangy house drizzle. The balance between crunch and silkiness shows attention to technique. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration guidelines on raw fish handling, proper temperature control is critical for food safety, and based on both taste and texture, the fish here is handled with care. It’s firm, clean-tasting, and never carries that overly fishy aroma that signals poor storage.

Beyond sushi, the kitchen steps confidently into other Japanese-inspired dishes. The ramen bowls arrive steaming, with a slow-simmered broth that tastes like it’s been developing flavor for hours. Tonkotsu broth, for example, requires careful temperature management and extended cooking to extract collagen from pork bones, creating that creamy consistency many diners love. Here, the broth has depth without being greasy. I’ve also tried their hibachi-style entrees, where grilled steak and shrimp come with sautéed vegetables and fried rice. The portions are generous, making it easy to share or save leftovers for the next day.

What stands out in reviews-both mine and many posted online-is consistency. In the restaurant business, consistency is everything. The National Restaurant Association often highlights that repeat customers are driven by reliable food quality and service. During my weekday lunch visit, the staff handled a steady stream of orders without missing a beat. Water glasses were refilled quickly, and special requests-like swapping white rice for brown rice-were accommodated without fuss. That kind of operational smoothness doesn’t happen by accident; it reflects organized kitchen processes and clear communication between front and back of house.

The atmosphere strikes a balance between casual diner and modern sushi bar. Clean lines, warm lighting, and neatly arranged tables create a space that works just as well for date night as it does for a quick solo meal. I’ve noticed families, couples, and even remote workers with laptops enjoying lunch here. The location on North Western Avenue makes it accessible, and street parking in the area is usually manageable compared to busier downtown Chicago spots.

One thing I appreciate is the transparency in pricing. The menu clearly lists roll combinations, sashimi sets, and specialty platters, so there are no surprises when the bill arrives. For anyone new to sushi, the staff is willing to explain the difference between nigiri and sashimi, or how specialty rolls are constructed. That clarity helps demystify Japanese cuisine for first-timers, which builds trust.

Of course, no restaurant is perfect. During peak dinner hours, there can be a short wait for a table, especially on weekends. However, in my experience, turnover is efficient, and takeout orders are packaged neatly to preserve presentation and temperature. The soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger are portioned thoughtfully, which sounds minor but makes a difference when you’re enjoying sushi at home.

Overall, the combination of fresh seafood, diverse menu options, attentive service, and a comfortable location makes this Chicago sushi restaurant more than just another neighborhood eatery. Whether you’re craving sashimi, ramen, hibachi, or inventive specialty rolls, it delivers a dining experience that feels both reliable and satisfying, the kind of place that earns its regulars one plate at a time.

  • we came on for chicago restaurant week and were in for a treat. the tom yum soup was by far my favorite — hot and very lemon grass forward. delicious. the crispy lobster was very very good as well. rainbow sushi was so tender and delicate. overall a good experience. the service was a little off, maybe because we were in the last reservation slot (8:30) so most of the food came out all at once (instead of coursed) which was a little hectic. but i would eat here again

  • I live close by & always wanted to check this place out. So happy we did & as suspected we are big fans now. Highly recommend making a reservation as this place is packed to the gills on any given night. Even though it feels packed you still have a sense of intimacy and privacy at your table. It’s definitely a place to converse and enjoy your dinner company and keep your phone put away in your pocket. Of course I had to take pics to share but next time I am fully tuning out. The service is a really nice pace, not too much checking in and a lot of time to enjoy your dishes. We went for the Chicago Restaurant Week specials and the menus and price point really blew us away. The decor is simple and cozy and the lighting was divinely dim. They had great little lamps on every table that assist with being able to see the menu without disrupting the ambiance. The one and only little negative thing I’ll say, and I’ll preface this by sharing that my husband is a professional chef of 20yrs and I’m a seasoned home cook- one dish we ordered tasted like butane so strongly that we couldn’t finish it. What may have happened is the flame torch had incomplete combustion, or if you don’t let the initial burst of gas burn off, you can ruin a dish. I was so excited to try the Richman Rainbow sushi dish and it was absolutely gorgeous when it arrived but we both took a piece and it completely tasted like butane. I tried a second piece to ensure it wasn't a fluke. I then put the dish up to my nose and it reeked. We left the dish alone and ate the other things that were coming to our table and when we gave our server the feedback it wasn’t well received. We were as nice as possible about it but did want to let them know that there was an issue. We didn’t want free food or a replacement, just to let them know that they may want to adjust their torch. Our server seemed to take it personally which is a shame. I unfortunately tasted butane in my mouth for the rest of the night no matter what I ate. But, truly, did not ruin our experience at all and we will eat here again. I would just be wary of any dish that highlights being torched in the future. The regular menu is extensive and we cannot wait to come back and try more! So happy we popped in. The pictures speak for themselves but I also shared the menus from the special week. And holy schnikeees the berry compote that came with the cheesecake was INSANE. Best I’ve ever had. The Tonkotsu Ramen was top tier, I will be craving that broth for days. Let’s keep this place open! A total treasure. I loved the wood and gold paneling details on the ceiling and walls.

  • Amazing!!!! We went here for a double date and the menu had something for everyone- fresh sushi, fried tempura, hot bowls of ramen, rice bowls, curry… you name it they got it. Everything was authentic and fresh. The service was wonderful and they had such creative cocktails, like a lychee martini! The mochi board for dessert was so creative and delicious. Everyone was so kind to us and we will definitely be back.

  • The menu here is expansive. Every type of Asian food you can think of. Our first round came out so fast that the fact that we ordered a plethora of food didn’t seem to matter - we were still in and out of there in under an hour. It seems they do a bustling take-out and delivery business but if you get a chance give their outdoor patio a try. It has some charming features including a water feature. Either it was the rice or the soy sauce but everything we ate had a sweet taste to it. The service was friendly and accommodating.

  • Date night! We ordered the tater tots as an appetizer, they were very tasty but also still just tater tots. Fun to eat with chopsticks though! The Thai iced tea was refreshing and not as sweet as other places. I got the widow maker sushi which was black rice, crab, and purple sweet potato - it was ok kinda dry and not super flavorful but still with a unique taste. The other dish was garlic ramen with pork and it was a bit on the salty side and was missing something to bring it all together, otherwise was good. Outdoor seating was nice in the warm summer night. Neighborhood is beautiful!
